A Ticket to the Past

The Nine Arches Bridge, Ella — Sri Lanka

Photograph by Indy

A train, a century-old bridge, and a jungle where time seems to stand still.

Deep in the mountains of Sri Lanka, a train emerges from the tunnel and begins its journey across the famous Nine Arches Bridge, surrounded by almost unreal tropical vegetation.

With its stone architecture, colourful carriages and dense jungle seemingly swallowing the railway line, the scene recalls the great journeys and adventure stories of another era.

It was this feeling of travelling beyond time that gave the photograph its name: A Ticket to the Past.

A journey suspended in time

On 25 November 2023, I spent more than half a day on the steep mountainside, waiting for the train and for the light I had been hoping for.

To reach this viewpoint, you have to follow a narrow path towards Asanka Cafe, a tiny wooden shelter perched above the valley. My tripod itself was balanced on a few wooden planks with a sheer drop below, so every movement required a little care.

At around two or three in the afternoon, the train finally appeared, emerging from the tunnel.

A light mist was already hanging over the mountains. About an hour later, the landscape would be completely transformed by torrential tropical rain. But for a few brief moments, the light, the vegetation and the passing train came together exactly as I had hoped.

The following day, I boarded that same train myself and continued my journey through Sri Lanka’s mountains and tea plantations.

Perhaps that is what makes this photograph so special to me: I had first watched the journey from afar before becoming a passenger myself.

This photo is part of the Landscapes collection, merging travel and misty atmosphere.

  • Fine Art paper

Both paper sizes are produced using pigment printing on 285 g/m² Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl paper. Its pearl finish adds a subtle sheen to the surface. The print is supplied unframed and without a border, ready for a frame of your choice.

  • Aluminium Dibond UltraHD

The Aluminium version combines a print on matt Fuji Crystal Archive photographic paper, a protective matt laminate and a 3 mm Dibond panel onto which the photograph is mounted. The 3 mm measurement refers to the thickness of the Dibond panel. This version is supplied without a frame, border or hanging system.

    Hanging your print
No hanging system is pre-installed. Adhesive hooks suitable for picture frames can be easily attached to the back of the Dibond panel.

  • A simple way to hang your print

At our exhibitions, we have successfully used adhesive hooks attached directly to the back of Aluminium Dibond prints. They offer a quick, discreet way to hang the artwork without modifying the print.

For the 60 × 80 cm size, two hooks rated for the weight of the print offer a particularly simple solution. Always follow the manufacturer’s load limits and installation instructions.

These hooks are an example of an accessory to purchase separately; they are not supplied with the print.

Which size suits your wall?

The 45 × 60 cm print, available only on Fine Art paper, suits a smaller space or an arrangement with other artworks. The 60 × 80 cm print, available on Fine Art paper or Aluminium Dibond, gives the bridge, train and jungle more room.

Choose your size according to the space available on your wall and the viewing distance. Dimensions are given as width × height, with no added border.

The Fine Art paper print is supplied unframed and can be framed to your taste. The final outer dimensions will be larger than the print itself and will depend on the frame and any mount, including their chosen widths.

Through Indy’s eyes

What I love about this image is how instantly it carries me into the adventure stories of another era.

The old stone bridge, the railway disappearing into the jungle, the train emerging from the tunnel… Everything seems to belong to a world in which travelling still meant setting out to discover unknown places.

There is something here that reminds me of adventure films in the spirit of Indiana Jones, but also of the great railway journeys found in early twentieth-century novels.

The jungle adds another layer to that feeling. For a moment, you could almost imagine that no one had ever set foot there before.

That sense of discovery, mystery and travelling beyond time is what I wanted to preserve in “A Ticket to the Past”.

Frequently asked questions

Can the print look slightly different from what I see on my screen?

Brightness and colour can vary from one screen to another. Each print material also lends its own character to the photograph, so slight differences between the screen image and the physical print are natural.

Is the print itself signed or numbered?

The prints are supplied without a physical signature or edition number on the artwork. Fine Art paper prints are open editions. Aluminium Dibond prints are limited to a maximum of 30 copies per artwork and come with a digital certificate of authenticity.
